Category B (“Restrict”) includes the substances listed as highest priority CIAs (HPCIAs) by the WHO with the exception of macrolides and those classes included in Category A. This category includes quinolones , 3rd- and 4th-generation cephalosporins and polymyxins. For these antibiotics, the risk to public health resulting from veterinary use needs to be mitigated by specific restrictions. These restricted antibiotics should only be used for the treatment of clinical conditions when there are no alternative antibiotics in a lower category that could be clinically effective. Especially for this category, use should be based on the results of antibiotic susceptibility testing, whenever possible.
